Morgan Freeman: Tea Party zijn racisten

Kameraden en vrienden, vandaag een kort maar krachtige boodschap: de Tea Party mafkezen en de Republikeinen zijn een bende racisten.
Voor wie het nog niet wist, maar bon, het is altijd goed om het eens te laten zeggen door een beroemdheid.

Bedenkingen bij een executie

De executie van de voormalige CIA-agent Osama Bin Laden deze week was voorpaginanieuws in alle kranten en de radio bestookte ons met constante 'informatie'.

Lieven De Cauter wees op DeWereldMorgen dat het eigenlijk een non-event is, dat de volksopstanden in Noord-Afrika en het Midden-Oosten een eind gemaakt heeft aan de noodzaak van terrorisme.

de moord op Bin Laden komt te laat. Jammer. De Arabische Lente was hem voor. Door de plotse roep om vrijheid, democratie, sociale rechtvaardigheid, namen de aan de gang zijnde Arabische revoluties zowel het islamfundamentalisme als de neoconservatieve diabolisering van de islam de wind uit de zeilen.

Tony Busselen maakt een aanverwante bedenking:

Terrorisme doodt onschuldige burgers. Het is het wapen van de wanhoop over het onrecht dat miljoenen mensen dagelijks moeten ondergaan onder de vorm van honger, ellende, bezetting en agressie door het Westen. De echte strijd tegen het terrorisme wordt dan ook niet gevoerd met luchtaanvallen. De echte strijd tegen het terrorisme wordt met succes gevoerd door de massa’s in Tunesië, Egypte, Jemen en Bahrein, die opkomen voor hun sociale en democratische rechten en de door het Westen gesteunde dictators omverwerpen. Wie echt gelooft in vrede en menselijke waardigheid staat niet aan de kant van de NAVO of de VS, maar wel aan de kant van de mensen op de pleinen en de straten in de Arabische wereld.

Tariq Ali stelt veel vragen bij de executie, de omstandigheden en de timing.

Opvallend is dat onze media bijzonder weinig duiding lijken te geven bij de opkomst van Bin Laden, zijn betrokkenheid bij CIA-operaties tegen links, tegen de Afghaanse Democratische regering. En dan vooral bij de gruwelijke oorlog die de VS uitvecht in het Arabische wereld en Afghanistan en Pakistan.
DeStandaard heeft bv een vulgair logo gemaakt met een doelwit. Met heel wat 'artikels' maar weinig inhoud.

The Islamophobia Campaign

Islamofobie, xenofobie en ander extreem-rechts discours is zeer populair bij de republikeinen in de Verenigde Staten.

PressTV geeft het woord aan Max Blumenthal. Hij heeft het over de oorsprong van de Islamofobische campagne en het verontrustende extreem-rechtse en racistische discours van de republikeinen en het extreem-zwakke discours van de democraten.

Enkele opvallende uitspraken:

The Islamophobia Campaign goes back to the 1930s and 40s when the American public was bombarded with anti-Arab/oriental images in the pop culture through cartoons and Hollywood movie productions for example. The movie Exodus (1960) with Paul Newman was about the foundation of Israel and the reason the film was made was because the American Jewish public was insufficiently sympathetic to or interested in Zionism and the establishment of the state of Israel so it portrayed Jewish terrorists as heroic and the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem collaborating with Nazis portraying the Palestinians as Nazis.

There was already a pre-existing context where Americans were cultivated to hate and demonize Arabs. And after 9/11 it turned into a full-on political campaign. Through my research this campaign really started in the 1990s in earnest with a documentary called Jihad in America, which was broadcast on public television with a self-styled terror expert - Steven Emerson who claimed in this documentary that there were terror cells inside the US.

This led to round ups and prosecutions of Muslim leaders of which all of these prosecutions have been completely discredited, with no links to terrorism yet some were thrown in Jail anyway. People in congress at this time were not taking Emerson seriously, not until 9/11.

Even after 9/11 American attitudes toward Muslims were not affected in any direct way. They were always negative and their attitudes toward the Palestinians were very negative. But there was no spike of change and George W Bush who was poised to unilaterally invade Iraq and change the geo-political atmosphere of the Middle East condemned Islamophobia at the National Cathedral - something Barak Obama has never done.

So it really took the election of Barak Obama, whose middle name is Hussein, to make this campaign into something national and much more coherent and powerful than before and it's because it has become part of the Republican campaign to attack Obama.

So by attacking Muslims they are actually waging a political campaign they think will have consequences in 2012 (election time) and so they see every Muslim in the US as a symbol of the Federal government, which is something we've never had before, because of this misperception of Barak Obama as himself a Muslim.
50% of Republicans according to a recent poll believe Barak Obama is not an American.

The far right is obsessed with Muslims and believes there is a secret plot to install Shariah law in the US. In fact they've been passing laws in states that are heavily controlled by Republicans like in Oklahoma to ban Shariah law as if there is attempts to make Shariah somehow affect the lives of Americans. And so you see this hysteria playing out and it starts with cynical partisan considerations, but then it has real life consequences.

Look at what happened in Yurbelinda, which is a conservative outer lying suburb of LA, San Diego where some Muslims gathered at a community centre to raise money for homeless Muslim women and they were surrounded by hundreds of people that I just consider to be the modern-day Ku Klux Klan who were shouting “Go home” and calling them terrorists; and these were just families walking by with children.

I heard from one of the Imams who helped plan the event that harassment has continued in supermarket parking lots in that community and in schools and where Muslim families are finding their property defaced. A lot of this isn't reported because first-generation Muslim immigrants feel intimidated by law enforcement because law enforcement is being typically used against them so to report these hate crimes is a big step.

My book begins with Dwight Eisenhower who was a Republican US president in the early 50s, you would consider him a moderate Republican and he warned about the threat of the far right because he and his administration were under attack by the early antecedents of the Tea Party of the far right called the John Birch Society - they had accused his secretary of state of being a communist agent for the Soviets and this is the same language you hear about Barak Obama; they even said Dwight Eisenhower's brother was raising money for the communist party - crazy stuff. The Republican Party at that time was considered the 'big tent' party - a moderate establishment.

There was a shift in the Republican Party in 1964 under Barry Goldwater when Southern Democrats who had opposed civil rights moved into the Republican Party when then President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil rights Act allowing African Americans to have voting rights etc.

There is really no leadership in the country right now that is capable of putting this hatred back in the box; instead what you have are a bunch of Republican presidential hopefuls who really have no chance of defeating Obama competing with one another for who can be the most extreme - because the far right controls the party.

Today, Newt Gingrich who is the former House majority leader; who has had three wives and who cheated on his second wife with a congressional staffer and then left his second wife while she was recovering from cancer, he's going to the church of Pastor John Hagee, the foremost leader of Christian Zionism in the US.
Hagee believes the end of the world could come any day and that Islam is the religion of Satan and that if Jews fail to convert to Christianity they will burn in an everlasting lake of fire. Yet he is also a great supporter of Israel and hailed by Netanyahu as a friend to the Jewish people. Now, Newt Gingrich is making a pilgrimage to his church.

So this just shows how extreme the party has become; how it's gone from the big tent of Eisenhower to a one-ringed circus of Palin and Gingrich.

Barak Obama essentially represents everything that the right wing hates. And if the right wing dominates the Republican Party, why would he expect any degree of bi-partisanship or cooperation? Right now, he is negotiating whether the Federal government will continue to operate because the Republicans are talking about shutting down the Federal government to force budget cuts, which will be basically cuts on the backs of working people, especially minorities.

"these goddamned newspapers!"

Chris Hedges, columnist bij het fantastische TruthDig.com, bracht deze week een zeer lezenswaardig interview met Ralph Nader, de Amerikaanse activist en herhaaldelijk presidentskandidaat. Enkele rake passages:

"The more outrageous the Republicans become, the weaker the left becomes. The more outrageous they become, the more the left has to accept the slightly less outrageous corporate Democrats."

Over het verschil tussen Bush, McCain en Obama is hij glashelder: "But once you take a broader view, it is the difference in the mph of corporatism. McCain is 50 miles per hour and Obama is 40 miles per hour."

Hij maakt een vlammende analyse van de toestand van links Amerika vandaag de dag:
"The left has disemboweled itself. It doesn't even have a strategy every four years like a good poker player. The best example is Richard Trumka and the AFL-CIO. Obama has given them nothing. Therefore, they are demanding nothing. They huff and puff. They make tough speeches. But Trumka hasn't even made Obama's campaign pledge of a $9.50 minimum wage by this year an issue. If you want to increase consumer demand, what better way to do it than to unleash $300 billion in wages? The card check for unionization, which Obama pledged as his No. 1 sop to the labor unions, is dead. The unions do not even demand a hearing. And now wait till you see what they will do to the public employee unions. Part of it is their own fault. They are going to be crushed. Everybody is ganging up on them. You have new class warfare. It is non-unionized lower income and middle class taking it out on the unionized middle-income public employees. It is a classic example of oligarchic manipulation. It will start playing out big time in New York State with Andrew Cuomo and others. They will start saying, ‘Why are you getting this? Most workers who pay the taxes, who pay your salaries, are not getting this.' This plays."

"The so-called liberal media, along with Fox, is touting the tea party and publicizing Palin. There was an editorial on Dec. 27 in The New York Times on the Repeal Amendment, the right-wing constitutional amendment to allow states to overturn federal law. The editorial writer at the end had the nerve to say there is no progressive champion. The editorial said that the liberals and progressives have faded out to let the tea party make history. And yet, for months, all The New York Times has done is promote Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck. They promote Newt Gingrich and the neocons on the Op-Ed pages. The book pages of the newspaper ignore progressive authors and pump all the right-wing authors.

"If we don't raise hell, we won't get any media. If we don't get any media, the perception will be that the tea party is the big deal."

"They are afraid of the right-wing because the right-wing bellows, and they have become right-wing. These goddamned newspapers should be picketed."

En tenslotte de toekomst:
"Every major movement starts with field organizers, the farmers, unions, and the civil rights movement. But there is nothing out there. We need to start learning from what was done in the past. All over the country people are pissed off. They hate Wall Street. They know they are being gouged. They know they are slipping behind. They know their kids will not be as well off as they were, and they were not that well off. But no one is putting it together."
The only way the union leaders can continue is to be in the shadows. And you don't build a strong movement in the shadows.

"The black swan question is whether something will erupt that is rare, extreme and unpredictable. It is amazing that it hasn't happened in any pockets of the country. How much more can the oppressed take before they revolt? And can they revolt without organizers? These are the two important questions. You have got to have organizers, and as of now we don't."

Iedereen Glenn Beck!

iedereen die de Amerikaanse politiek en de media een beetje volgt heeft de figuur Glenn Beck ongetwijfeld al tegengekomen. Die man is fantastisch, een radiopresentator en de host van zijn eigen actualiteitenprogramma op Fox News (hoe kan het ook anders), een voormalig junkie en Mormoon, auteur van talloze boeken. Zijn shows zijn werkelijk hilarisch, moest het niet zo intriest zijn. Hij is een aartsreactionair en werkelijk geobsedeerd door alles wat ook maar zou kunnen lijken op iets progressief. Hij is uiteraard ook ten zeerste islamofoob.
Het leukste aan Beck is zijn tirades over allerlei boosaardige complotten, die 'de media' aan het publiek wil verkopen. Fascinerend dat soort extreem-rechts 'anti-establishment'-discours.

Onze eigen extreem-rechtse populisten kunnen nog heel wat van hem leren.
Gelukkig zijn er nu handige hulpmiddelen te verkrijgen. PoliticalHumor ontwikkelde de 'Conspiracy Theory Generator'. Een uitstekende complottheorie is maar een muisklik weg.



Uiteraard heeft een goeie extreem-rechtse demagoog ook een goeie speechwriter nodig. Geen nood ook daar is aan gedacht, vanaf nu krijg je rake citaten dank zij de 'Insane-O-Matic Quote Generator', fantastisch toch!




Ziezo, dames en heren extreem-rechtse populisten en demagogen-in-spe, nu veel oefenen, thuis, in de spiegel.

Voor de liefhebbers van de betere tirades: Obama communist! de familie van Obama communisten! zijn jeugdvrienden communisten! zijn schoolvrienden communisten! Overal communisten!


Het triestigste is natuurlijk dat deze complete zot nogal wat kijkcijfers haalt en zijn tirades over het publiek kan uitstorten. Het politieke klimaat in de VS wordt er niet gezelliger op.

extreem-rechts mobiliseert tegen Obama

Kameraden en vrienden,

ik weet niet hoe het bij jullie zit, maar het nieuws doet mij de laatste tijd de muren oplopen. De documentaires die uitgezonden worden op de 'zender voor de actieve meerwaardezoeker' doen mij in huilen uitbarsten. Gelukkig is er nog het internet.

Vandaag jullie aandacht voor zeer bekijkenswaardige uitzendingen van Al-Jazeera.

President Obama lijkt steeds maar controversiëler te worden. Links lijkt meer en meer de rug toe te keren naar de president van 'Yes we can, but No we won't'. Rechts en extreem-rechts lijkt steeds hysterisch te worden in de campagne.

Al Jazeera bracht deze week een reportage uit van Rick Rowley en Jacquie Soohen over 'White Power'-groepen: neonazi's en andere fascistische haatgroepen. Meer dan het bekijken waard.



Aansluitend kan ik volgende uitzending aanraden van het immens populaire duiding- en discussieprogramma van Riz Khan.





Fascistische groepen die op hol slaan, opgestookt door extreem-rechtse commerciële televisiezenders, met platvloerse racisme, islamofobie, en een zeer vulgair anticommunisme, verontrustend.

Speechen en 'Generatie Obama'

Obama wist bij zijn verkiezing een enorm enthousiasme op te wekken bij de mensen. Vooral zijn speechen maakten grote indruk.
Tegenlicht nam die toespraken onder de loep, maakte een portret van 'Jon Favreau', de speechschrijver en bestudeerde de impact van die speechen.


"Wat maakt een politieke toespraak historisch? Hoe kan een president zich via woorden onsterfelijk maken? En welke invloed had die retoriek op de massale jongerenbeweging die Barack Obama hielp om president te worden?
Achter de historische speeches van Barack Obama schuilt een piepjonge speechschrijver. Tijdens de verkiezingen schreef Jon Favreau de toespraken waarmee Obama als totale nieuwkomer de harten van miljoenen Amerikaanse kiezers wist te veroveren. Jon is net 27 en nu al benoemd tot hoofd speechschrijver van Obama in het Witte Huis. Hij wordt daarmee het jongste lid van president Obama's inner circle in de West Wing.
Wie is Jon Favreau? Waar komt hij vandaan? Wat bracht hem zó snel, zó dicht bij het hart van de Amerikaanse politieke macht?
Welke boodschap hoort een nieuwe generatie Amerikaanse jongeren in Obama's toespraken? Is Favreau de spreekbuis van deze generatie? En hoe kijken zijn generatiegenoten tegen hem aan?
De laatste dagen vóór Election Day op een Obama campagnekantoortje van een zwarte universiteit in Virginia werden gefilmd. Jonge Obama vrijwilligers, waaronder de landelijke studentenleider van Obama, vertellen welke inspiratie zij vonden in de toespraken. Met Jon Favreaus docenten uit zijn studententijd, een professor in retorica, een generatiesocioloog en de vermaarde Kennedy-speechschrijver Ted Sorensen wordt er in de semiotiek van de Obama toespraken gedoken. Een nieuwe generatie Amerikaanse jongeren eigent zich via Obama de 21ste eeuw toe, met nieuw elan, optimisme, harmonie en engagement."

Fisk over Obama en de Nobel Prize

Robert Fisk, het moet gezegd zijn, het is ne straffe mens.
Deze week was hij in Phara, waar hij enkele interessante dingen zei. Maar geloof mij niet, bekijken zou ik zo zeggen. Of lees het artikel dat hij eerder schreef: Obama, man of peace? No, just a Nobel prize of a mistake
