De extreem-rechtse Amerikaans president heeft een frontale aanval geopend op Paus Leo XIV.
De vredesoproepen van de Kerk waren in het verkeerde keelgat geschoten. Extreem-rechtse autoritaire bullebakken dulden geen tegenspraak, zelfs niet van de Kerk.
Democracy Now! vat de ronduit hallucinante interactie goed samen.

Het uitstekende Democracy Now! brengt twee historici over de Amerikaanse aanval op Venezuela. Ze bieden zeer waardevolle historische achtergrondinformatie - een mooi tegengewicht voor de berichtgeving bij ons, die bestaat uit krankzinnige ramblings van die oranje mafkees, waar onze "experten" dan over zitten te speculeren.
Aan het woord komen Alejandro Velasco, New York University, en Miguel Tinker Salas, emeritus professor aan Pomona College.
Wederom een politieke moord in de VS.
C.K. was een fascist die geld verdiende aan haat zaaien. Hij zaaide haat tegen andersdenkenden, tegen links, tegen activisten, publiceerde lijsten met en eiste het ontslag van progressieve proffen en docenten, hij ijverde voor homofobe en transfobe maatregelen, verspreidde ongebreideld racisme, ijverde voor de oprichting van concentratiekampen en deportaties. Hij pleitte voor ongebreidelde toegang tot vuurwapens, ongeacht de mentale toestand van de koper.
Enkele van zijn ronduit walgelijke uitspraken:
Wie haat zaait, zal haat oogsten. Moord is verschrikkelijk. En de maatschappij moet er alles aan doen om moorden te stoppen. CK voerde gericht actie tegen elke vorm van wapenbeperking. CK voerde gericht campagne voor het Trumpregime, die de afgelopen periode heel sterk bespaarde en snoeide in de FBI, een instantie die politiek geïnspireerd geweld moet opsporen en verhinderen. Extreemrechts gebruikt deze moord nu al om meer haat te zaaien en om geweld tegen tegenstanders te promoten.

Zeer interessant is ook wat Naomi Klein te zeggen heeft over paus Franciscus en de extreem-rechtse "theologie" van J.D. Vance en de Orde Amoris.
De verkiezing van Leo XIV zorgt voor heel wat reacties. En veel speculatie over welke weg de Kerk onder zijn leiding uit zal gaan.
Een eerste stuk van Democracy Now!, aan het woord komen James V. Grimaldi, van de zeer interessante National Catholic Reporter, en Bryan Massingale, priester en professor ethiek. Van hem het mooie citaat:
We need him to step into that void of moral and ethical leadership that we have in our world right now. And we also need the pope to be a prophet of hope in these uncertain times.
Kritische geluiden zijn er zeker ook. Hij zou in het verleden niet of te weinig ingegrepen hebben bij gevallen van seksueel misbruik door geestelijken onder zijn gezag. Democracy Now! brengt Peter Isely, van het Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests.
Democracy Now! brengt vandaag een zeer interessant interview met Angela Davis, professor en Afro-Amerikaans progressief boegbeeld. Het gesprek gaat over Palestina, de genocide en de strijd in solidariteit.
Een extra reden om fan te zijn van paus Franciscus, zijn openlijke bezorgdheid over en solidariteit met Palestina.
Op deze fraaie zondag een reportage van Democracy Now! over de extreem-rechtse aanval op onderwijs en dan vooral geschiedenisonderwijs. Aan het woord komt professor Jason Stanley met zijn publicatie "Erasing History: How Fascists Rewrite the Past to Control the Future."
Nog een beetje extra achtergrondinformatie, Amnesty International maakte deze clip vorig jaar nog om, nog maar eens, de vrijlating te eisen van deze politiek gevangene:
Native American activist Leonard Peltier zat decennia opgesloten. Biden gaf hem op de valreep een gunst, hij mag de rest van zijn straf thuis uitzitten. Hij kon de gevangenis meteen verlaten.

Vandaag wordt de compleet krankzinnige extreem-rechtse misogyne oranje oplichter president van de VSA. Gelukkig wordt er ook stevig actie gevoerd.
Op het zogenaamde Peace Ball, een protest-event rond verzet tegen oorlog, racisme, armoede en zoveel meer, sprak de geniale activist en professor Angela Davis.
A lot more is happening in the world than the inauguration of someone who represents fascism in this country and the world. And if we look back at struggles for justice and equality, we find that there aren’t often propitious moments for those struggles. We’ve always confronted waves of conservatism. And while we cannot create the conditions for the struggles in which we engage, we can bring our determination. We can bring our vision for a better future. And even as we express the deep disappointment — and I’m not going to try to enumerate all of the things about which we are collectively disappointed, but we can’t find ourselves so ensconced in that disappointment that we don’t create the kind of hope that will allow us to move forward and pass legacies to the next generation of people who are struggling. And we do — we do — we do want to join that celebration that Linda Sarsour talked about on the sands of Gaza. We want to be able to look forward to that moment.
Now, I guess I should at least mention the fact that the conditions of struggle today are horrendous. And when I try to imagine what it might mean to confront, you know, all of those who are the billionaires, who once were opposed to Trump, who are now offering themselves up to him, but when I think about the move toward fascism, I also celebrate the fact that we have never seen as many people stand up for the freedom of Palestine. People who were dissuaded in the past by Zionist propaganda are standing up and powerfully demanding a free Palestine. Free, free Palestine. And that is what we are celebrating this evening. That is what we are celebrating.
Now, I think it might be propitious — I’ll use that word again — that the inauguration is happening on the same day as we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King. And in that context, I want to remind us that it was Dr. King who said that we cannot capitulate to finite disappointments, and what we do is we confront those finite disappointments with infinite hope. And that is what we are in the process of doing.

We remember the legendary historian, author, professor, playwright and activist Howard Zinn, who was born 100 years ago today. Zinn was a regular guest on Democracy Now! from the start of the program in 1996 up until his death in 2010 at age 87. After witnessing the horrors of World War II as a bombardier, Zinn became a peace and justice activist who picketed with his students at Spelman College during the civil rights movement and joined in actions such as opposing the Vietnam War. He later spoke out against the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. "I believe neutrality is impossible, because the world is already moving in certain directions. Wars are going on. Children are starving," Zinn said in a 2005 interview. "To be neutral … is to collaborate with whatever is going on, to allow it to happen." His classic book, "A People's History of the United States," retells the country's history from the perspective of everyday people who resisted oppression and exploitation by more powerful forces.

De autobiografie van Angela Davis is een prachtig geschreven, meeslepend relaas over racisme, over emancipatie, over activisme, over sociale strijd. Het boek is nog steeds zeer actueel.
Angela Davis maakte een nieuwe versie van haar werk uit 1974. Democracy Now brengt een zeer bekijkenswaardig gesprek met de auteur.
"It is very inspiring to recognize how far we have come, not only in the way we talk about sexuality, but the way we talk about gender and the way we are constantly challenging binary notions of gender. And all of these transformations have happened as a consequence of the fact that people have dedicated themselves to struggle, to struggle for an end to racism, to imperialism, to war, an end to misogyny. And let me say that in rereading that text I became aware of the absolute importance of antiracist, anti-capitalist, abolitionist feminism."
