Assata Shakur, Afro-Amerikaans activist en revolutionair, is deze week overleden. Ze was een boegbeeld van de Amerikaanse progressieve burgerrechtenbeweging.
Ze werd vervolgd en was politiek gevangene in de VS. Uiteindelijk wist ze te ontsnappen en leefde sindsdien als politiek vluchteling op Cuba. In 2005 nog loofde de VS 2.000.000 dollar uit als beloning voor haar "arrestatie".
Assata schreef boeken en prachtige gedichten. En ze inspireerde tal van progressieve kunstenaars.
Assata was peettante van de vermoorde rapper Tupac Shakur. Die schreef in 1991 Words of Wisdom.
